Every one running a business [big or small] want his company to be memorable, unique and recognizable. Logo is one of the most important parts of a company image/brand. And of course, the logo must be unique, memorable and recognizable.
Here comes the beauty criteria. You don’t want your logo be an ugly one, right? So what’s beauty in a logo?? Colors, text font, graphical elements, dynamics…you name it. But most important of all is the whole composition. I stand for KISS rule: Keep It Simple, Stupid. The simpler – the better.
But. If you look at the 3d logos, you will find that they are very attractive, nice and so damn cool. Just a few ones:

So how to decide if you need a 3D logo or not?
This is not only for 3D logo designs, but for designs using gradients and other complex techniques as well. The thing is that if you are planning to put your logos on clothes for promo [hats, tees, etc.] you will have to order embroider services. Gradients are not suitable for embroidery… 3D designs… well, I don’t know for sure, but it will cost you a lot more than a regular 2D logo.
3 dimensional logos are very attractive to kids. Logo design criteria for children products is a different story of course, but I will mention a couple: more vivid colors, more details, more fun. A total opposite of a business logo.

Conclusion:
How to decide whether you need a 3D/gradient logo?
1. Price - the more colors – the more you pay.
2. Target audience – who is your customer? A curious kid or a busy adult?
3. Promo – where and how will you promote your logo? Gradients and embroidery don’t coincide. Web-only usage? Well then, any style will do.
